These temple ruins are located in the Lurin River Valley near the city of Lima on the central coast of Peru, South America. They were the center of the classical Lima culture of the ancient Andean civilization, which was established between the 3rd and 8th centuries, and later developed into the most important temple city on the coast in the 10th century. During the Inca period, a huge Temple of the Sun and the Palace of the Moon, home to the Mamacona girls who served it, were built, making it the largest religious center of the Incas outside of the Cusco region, and it is said to have been bustling with pilgrims from all over the country.
