...The Vosges Mountains range from 300-400 metres above sea level in the north to over 1000 metres in the south, rising from the lowlands along the Rhine with steep fault lines.

The name Alsace comes from the fact that it was occupied by the Romans around the 1st century BCE and was called Alsatia. In ancient times it was inhabited by the Gauls, then occupied by the Romans, and remained a Roman territory until the 5th century, when the Alamanni, a Germanic tribe, invaded.
