...A marine fish of the family Pongoidae in the order Perciformes (illustration). Also known as Ethiopia. This is said to be because its body color turns black after it is caught, and because Japan became closely related to Ethiopia when it was caught in large numbers along the Pacific coast of Japan in the 1930s. It is an open ocean fish, distributed in tropical to polar regions around the world. In Japan, it is common from the central to southern Pacific coast of Honshu. It is called Kuromanagattsuo, Tetsubin, Piya, Biya in Tokyo, Hirabuta in Misaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Kuronbo in Kushiro, Hokkaido. Its body is flat and disc-shaped. ...
