A former town in Sakata County in eastern Shiga Prefecture. It occupies the left bank of the Amano River on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa and includes the Samegai area. The main settlement has long been a key transportation hub and a major port for water transport on Lake Biwa. Currently, it is a junction for the Tokaido Main Line, Shinkansen, Hokuriku Main Line, Meishin Expressway, and Hokuriku Expressway. The town operates in agriculture and forestry, and also farms sweetfish and processes wood products. The reclaimed land on the lake shore is now a rice paddy area. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In February 2005, it merged with San'in Town and Ibuki Town in Sakata County to become Maibara City. Area: 42.78 km2 .
