Maibara [town] - Maihara

Japanese: 米原[町] - まいはら

A former town in Sakata County in eastern Shiga Prefecture. It occupies the left bank of the Amano River on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa and includes the Samegai area. The main settlement has long been a key transportation hub and a major port for water transport on Lake Biwa. Currently, it is a junction for the Tokaido Main Line, Shinkansen, Hokuriku Main Line, Meishin Expressway, and Hokuriku Expressway. The town operates in agriculture and forestry, and also farms sweetfish and processes wood products. The reclaimed land on the lake shore is now a rice paddy area. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In February 2005, it merged with San'in Town and Ibuki Town in Sakata County to become Maibara City. ^{Area: 42.78 km2} . 滋賀県東部，坂田郡の旧町。琵琶湖東岸の天野川左岸を占め，醒井(さめがい)地区を含む。主集落は古くからの交通要地で琵琶湖水運の要港でもあった。現在は東海道本線・新幹線と北陸本線，名神高速道路と北陸自動車道の分岐点。農林業を営み，アユの養殖，木製品加工も行う。湖岸の入江干拓地は水田地帯。1993年に琵琶湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2005年２月坂田郡山東町，伊吹町と合併し市制，米原市となる。42.78km²。１万2345人（2003）。
