An arboreal squirrel with a shiny black back and tail, white sides and cheeks, and reddish-brown underside and limbs, hence its name. A mammal of the Sciuridae family in the Rodentia order. Found in Sumatra, Borneo, Malaya, and Thailand. Body length 24-26 cm, tail length 20-25 cm, weight 370-500 g. Its natural habitat is tropical rainforests, but it often inhabits orchards of oil palms and coconut palms, where it feeds on the fruit. Its main diet is fruit and insects. It builds a large nest high up in the tree by weaving together branches it has nibbled, and gives birth to 2-3 young between January and March.

背中と尾が光沢のある黒色，体側と頰が白色，腹面と四肢が赤茶色の目だった配色をもつ樹上生のリス。名もこれによる。齧歯（げつし）目リス科の哺乳類。スマトラ，ボルネオ，マラヤ，タイに分布する。体長24～26cm，尾長20～25cm，体重370～500g。本来の生息場所は熱帯雨林であるが，しばしばアブラヤシやココヤシなどの果樹園にすみつき，果実を食害する。おもな食べ物は果実と昆虫。木の上の高所に自分でかじりとった枝を編んで大きな巣をつくり，1～3月に2～3子を生む。
