Meissonier, Juste-Aurèle
Born: 1693/1695. Turin
[Died] July 31, 1750. Born in Paris, Italy, he was a French architect, interior decorator, sculptor, painter, and goldsmith. He studied in Italy and was influenced by the Baroque architect Francis Borromini. He was one of the founders of the Rococo style, and was appointed goldsmith to Louis XV in 1724 and designer of the king's bedroom and cabinets in 1726. In 1728, he created the first Rococo design with a chandelier for the king's bedroom. As an architect, he designed the façade of the Saint-Sulpice Cathedral in Paris (1726). He left behind Meissonnier, recueil de ses oeuvres d'ornements (originally written in 1743).

Born: February 21, 1815, Lyon
Died January 31, 1891. French painter. He moved to Paris in 1830 and studied under L. Cognier, and in 1834 exhibited his works at the Salon for the first time. He painted historical paintings based on the campaigns of Napoleon I and genre paintings influenced by 17th-century Dutch painters, and gained fame from the mid-1840s. He also left behind over 300 illustrations for books. His major work is Solferino (1863).

イタリア生れのフランスの建築家,室内装飾家,彫刻家,画家,金細工師。イタリアに学び,バロックの建築家 F.ボロミーニの影響を受けた。ロココ様式の創始者の一人で,1724年ルイ 15世の金細工師に,26年国王の寝室とキャビネットのデザイナーに任命され,28年には,王の寝室のためのシャンデリアで,ロココのデザインを初めて表現した。建築家としてはパリのサン・シュルピス聖堂のファサードの設計 (1726) など。『メソニエ,装飾作品図案集』 Meissonnier,recueil de ses oeuvres d'ornements (43起稿) を残した。

フランスの画家。 1830年パリに出て L.コニエに学び,34年サロンに初出品。ナポレオン1世の戦役に取材した歴史画や,オランダの 17世紀の画家たちの影響を受けた風俗画を描き,40年代中葉から名声を得た。ほかに本の挿絵を 300点以上残した。主要作品は『ソルフェリノ』 (1863) 。
