…From 1833 (Tenpo 4), he traveled throughout Japan, and from 1838 he became a monk in Nagasaki and Hirado for five years, changing his name to Bunkei. During this time, he heard about the situation in the north from Tsugawa Bunsaku, an adult in Nagasaki, and became interested in it. In 1844 (Koka 1), he returned home, returned to secular life, and set off north on his own. In 1845, he explored eastern and western Ezo, in 1846 northern Ezo (Sakhalin), and in 1849 (Kaei 2), he explored Kunashiri Island and Etorofu Island, and wrote such works as The First Voyage to Ezo, The Second Voyage to Ezo, and The Third Voyage to Ezo. In 1854 (Ansei 1), the Edo Shogunate established the Hakodate Magistrate and in the following year, Ezo was again directly administered. He was employed by the Shogunate as an official in charge of Ezo, and from 1856 to 1858, he explored Eastern and Western Ezo and Northern Ezo, and wrote such works as "Takeshiro's Travel Diary," "Diary of Investigation of the Mountains and Rivers of Eastern and Western Ezo," and "Map of Investigation of the Mountains and Rivers of Eastern and Western Ezo." *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Ezo Nisshi" are listed below.
