Norwegian novelist. Also known as Kieran or Själan. Formerly known as Kierand in German. A naturalist writer active in the 1880s, he was strongly influenced by Kierkegaard, Mill, and Heine. Although he was from a wealthy middle-class family in Stavanger, one of Norway's major trading ports, his works show a strong critical attitude towards the class in which he grew up. His representative works include "Garman and Warsch" (1880) and "Captain Warsch" (1882), which express the class contrast between Stavanger's commercial aristocracy and the poor with sharp irony and add romantic descriptions of nature. Other socially critical trilogy works include "Marriage" (1883), "Fortuna" (1884), and "Midsummer Night" (1887). He served as mayor of Stavanger in 1891 and governor of Stavanger in 1902.
