Mountain leech - Haemadipsa zeylanica japonica

An annelid of the family Landyridae in the class Hirudinae. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and lives in mountain wetlands. It is cylindrical, about 3 cm long, with a flattened ventral surface. Its yellowish-brown dorsal surface has three vertical black stripes. There are one to four rings per segment at the anterior and posterior ends of the body, but five rings per segment in the central part. There are five pairs of eyes that protrude spherically on the second, third, fourth, fifth, and eighth rings. The mouth, located inside the anterior sucker, has three jaws, each with about 90 teeth. It is hermaphroditic, with the male genital opening opening on the 11th segment and the female genital opening opening on the 12th segment.

ヒル綱ヤマビル科の環形動物。本州，四国，九州に分布し，山間の湿地にすむ。体長が3cmほどの円柱形で，腹面は扁平。黄褐色の背面に3本の黒い縦じまがある。体の前･後端では1体節に1～4体環あるが，中央部では1体節に5体環を占める。5対の眼は第2,3,4,5,8体環上にあって球形に突出している。前方吸盤の中にある口には3個のあごがあって，それぞれに約90個の歯がある。雌雄同体で雄生殖口は第11体節，雌生殖口は第12体節に開く。
