A marine animal belonging to the family Heterolepas, class Crustacea, order Complete Thorax. It drifts on driftwood and seaweed, and also attaches to fishing nets and the bottom of boats. It is widely distributed throughout the oceans, and is often found in the waters around Japan. Its head, covered with five bluish-white shell plates, namely a ridge plate, a pair of dorsal plates and a pair of flaps, is about 5 cm long, and the extendable handle is also about 5 cm long. There are many L. anserifera , which drifts on pumice, in the waters around Japan. The name Heterolepas is sometimes used as a general name, including Heterolepas quadrata (family Heterolepasidae), which is found mainly on crabs, and Poecilasma kaempferi (family Poecilasma), which is found on spider crabs.
