The central archives of the nation were established in Paris to preserve and view historical documents. The distinctive feature of the French archives system is that, with the central archives at the top, there are Archives Départementales at the prefecture level and Archives Communales at the municipal level (among which the archives of major large cities are sometimes treated separately as Archives Municipales), corresponding to the pyramidal administrative structure, creating an orderly system for preserving historical documents nationwide.
