Pawnbroker

Japanese: 質地 - しっち
Pawnbroker
Under the Ritsuryo system, reclaimed land was pawned as collateral for loans of money. This practice became common after the Kamakura period, when land was privately owned, and during the Edo period, land was pawned as a means of financing due to the prohibition on the sale and purchase of land. When the pawned land expired, it was returned to its former owner, but most of it was sold off.
