Nikaho is an old town in Yuri District facing the Sea of Japan in the southwest of Akita Prefecture. The Uetsu Main Line runs through the town. The coast is covered with large paddy fields, making it a rice-growing region with advanced land improvement work. The fishing industry produces salmon, cod, and Atka mackerel. The electronics industry is thriving, with many factories and related businesses. In October 2005, it merged with the towns of Kanaura and Kisakata in Yuri District to become Nikaho City.
