Service Society

Japanese: サービス社会 - サービスしゃかい

It refers to a society in which the production of knowledge, information, and non-material benefits plays a central role, compared to a society (especially an industrial society) in which the production of material goods is at the center of economic activity. To that extent, it can be used interchangeably with terms such as post-industrial society and information society. Therefore, the industrial structure of such a society is dominated by the tertiary industry according to Clark's classification, and in terms of occupational structure, white-collar workers in the broad sense (managerial workers, professional and technical workers, clerical workers, and sales workers) account for a large proportion.

物財の生産がその経済活動の中心にある社会(とりわけ工業社会)に比べて，知識･情報，非物質的便益の生産が中心的な重みをもつ社会を指す。そのかぎりで脱工業社会，情報化社会などという用語と相互に代替することもできる。したがって，その社会の産業構造はクラーク分類による第3次産業が中心的な比重をもち，また職業構造の面では広義のホワイトカラー(管理的職業従事者，専門的･技術的職業従事者，事務従事者，さらに販売従事者)が大きな比率を占める。
