Everyman (English spelling)

Japanese: エブリマン（英語表記）Everyman

An English morality play. It was written around 1495 and is thought to have been a translation of the Dutch "Elckerlijc." Its theme is the conflict between virtue and vice in humans, and it allegorically teaches that when death comes, only good deeds will be present at the final judgment seat. The characters, who are personified as knowledge, beauty, friendship, etc., go beyond mere symbolism and are brilliant as character portrayals. It was revived in London by W. Paul in 1901. In 1920, Hofmannsthal's adaptation, "Jedermann" (1911), was performed in a spectacular style at the Salzburg Festival, which caused a great sensation, and it has since become a regular event at the festival.
