A bird of the order Accipitridae (Accipitridae) (illustration). It is known for forming very large flocks during autumn migration. It breeds in Japan, Primorsky Krai, and northern China, and migrates to Southeast Asia and New Guinea to spend the winter. It arrives in Japan around April and breeds in forests below 1000m above sea level in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Izu Islands. It often cries "pikkui" and is a relatively common sight as there are many of them. Total length is about 50cm. Its upperparts are reddish brown, and its underparts are whitish with brown horizontal stripes. Its main diet consists of snakes, lizards, and frogs, and it will also catch mice and small birds.

タカ目タカ科の鳥（イラスト）。秋の渡りのときには非常に大きな群れをつくって渡るので有名。日本，沿海州，中国北部で繁殖し，東南アジアやニューギニアに渡って越冬する。日本には4月ころ渡来し，本州，四国，九州，伊豆諸島などの標高1000m以下の林で繁殖する。〈ピックゥイー〉とよく鳴き，数も多いので見かけることが比較的多いタカである。全長約50cm。上面は赤褐色，下面は白っぽくて褐色の横縞がある。おもな食物は，ヘビ，トカゲ，カエルなどで，ネズミや小型の鳥をとることもある。
