Hypocyrta (English spelling)

Japanese: ヒポキルタ(英語表記)Hypocyrta
Hypocyrta (English spelling)
A genus of the Gesneriaceae family, with about 10 or so species found mainly in Brazil. It is an epiphytic or semi-epiphytic, somewhat woody plant with stems that grow and spread in all directions. The genus Hypocyrta is characterized by its flower shape, with the base of the flower tube swelling like a pufferfish. The scientific name Hypocyrta means "swelling at the bottom." In addition to being cultivated for its flowers, a few wild species and horticultural varieties are cultivated as ornamental plants. In recent years, the main species cultivated in Japan is Hypocyrta radicans (H. radicans Klotzsch et Hanst., or Nematanthus gregarius D. Denh.).
