One of the most popular series in the UK. It was first published in 1906 at the suggestion of critic and editor Ernest Rhys. It contains mainly British and American works, as well as modern European masterpieces and classical works, and has made a great contribution to bringing humanities education to the masses. Originally it was a small pocket-sized book, but in the 1950s it became larger. On the cover is a line from the medieval morality play Everyman, "I will go with thee," which shows the series' attitude. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
