A general term for benign, localized tumor-like growths that occur in the gingiva. Most are inflammatory or reactive lesions, with few being neoplastic. They occur in periodontal tissues such as the gingiva, periodontal ligament, and alveolar periosteum, and are most common in the interdental papilla. They are usually pedunculated and grow slowly. They are most common in people in their 20s and 30s, and are two to three times more common in women than in men. Factors that contribute to their occurrence include chronic irritation from tartar, sharp edges of tooth root remnants, and poor prosthetic appliances, as well as constitution and endocrine abnormalities in women.
