... Clark also used ethnographic models, but his work is rooted in the American tradition of anthropological archaeology. The "New Archaeology" advocated by LRBinford and others in the United States since the latter half of the 1960s also builds on these two traditions by introducing the principles of general systems theory and statistics. Scientific archaeology in Japan is said to have begun in 1877, when the American ES Morse excavated the Omori Shell Mound.
