It is an evergreen perennial plant of the Araceae family found mainly in tropical America, with a few in the Philippines, etc. There are more than 30 species, some of which are cultivated in greenhouses. However, the ones sold as cut flowers or potted plants are often horticultural varieties of hybrid origin. It grows clumps of dark green leaves with long stalks from the ground up, with thin, leathery leaf blades and prominent pinnate lateral veins. The flowers are borne on spadix, typical of the Araceae family, at the end of long flower stalks that emerge from the leaf clump, and are surrounded by a large, ornamental white spathe. It is propagated by dividing the plant.

おもに熱帯アメリカに，少数がフィリピンなどに分布するサトイモ科の常緑多年草で，三十数種があり，一部が温室などで栽培される。ただし，切花や鉢植で出回るのは雑種起源の園芸品種であることが多い。長い柄をもつ深緑色の葉を地際から叢生し，葉身はうすい革質で羽状の側脈がよく目立つ。花は葉叢から抜き出た長い花茎の先に，サトイモ科特有の肉穂花序につき，観賞価値のある大きな白い仏炎包に抱かれる。株分でふやす。
