Seger Kegel; Seger cone

Seger Kegel; Seger cone
This is a high-temperature measuring tool invented by German H. Segel in 1886, but it cannot be considered a gauge because it is disposable. Pure alumina is mixed with various compounds (silica sand, lime, soda, boric acid, iron oxide, lead oxide, etc.) and formed into a slightly inclined triangular pyramid (cone) usually 5 to 7 cm high. There are 59 grades with prescribed compositions in 20 to 30 degree increments from softening temperature 590 to 2000 degrees Celsius, and they are numbered from SK022 to SK42 (SK is the initial letter of the German word). Examples of softening points are SK1 = 1100 degrees Celsius, SK10 = 1300 degrees Celsius, SK20 = 1530 degrees Celsius, SK30 = 1670 degrees Celsius, SK40 = 1920 degrees Celsius, etc. Several cones with softening temperatures near the desired temperature are set up in a furnace, and the temperature is determined by the number of the one that has softened until its top touches the base. It is often used in the ceramics industry to determine the effectiveness of the firing process in the furnace rather than to measure the temperature accurately.
