Caltha palustris (English name)

Japanese: リュウキンカ(英語表記)Caltha palustris
Caltha palustris (English name)
A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family, also called Enkousou. It grows in wetlands and flowing water in the cool temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. It has a short rhizome underground that produces thick roots. The stem is thick and fleshy, and the lower half of the stem grows along the ground. It takes root at each node. The basal leaves have long stalks, and the leaves are kidney-shaped, 4-8 cm in diameter, with low wavy sawtooth edges. The stem leaves have no stalks. Flowers bloom at the top of the stem in spring, usually in pairs. They have 5-7 yellow petal-like sepals, 2-3 cm in diameter, no actual petals, and many yellow stamens. After flowering, they produce pod-like capsules about 1 cm long. Note that marsh marigolds are those with upright stems that grow to about 30 cm in height, while those with stems that radiate along the ground and barely rise are called Enkousou, and are sometimes treated as separate species.
