Born: July 18, 1872, Yorkshire
[Died] April 7, 1949. Norfolk. A British historian of modern economics, particularly the Industrial Revolution. Graduated from Oxford University. Active as a journalist. Became editor of the Liberal Party weekly magazine The Speaker (1899), and subsequently served as editorial writer and correspondent for the Tribune, the Daily News, the Manchester Guardian, and other publications. During that time, he and his wife Lucy published a series of books that revealed the difficult conditions faced by workers during the Industrial Revolution, and established the so-called "Hammond School." Both he and his wife were awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Oxford (1933) and the University of Manchester (44). Major works include "The Village Labourer, 1760-1832" (11), "The Town Labourer, 1760-1832" (17), "The Skilled Laborer, 1760-1832" (19), "The Rise of Modern Industry" (25), "The Age of the Chartists" (30).

A city located in northwest Indiana, halfway between Chicago and Gary. Settled in 1869. Meat packaging using ice from inland lakes developed. The city's name comes from G. Hammond, the founder of frozen meat transportation. Heavy industry is not as developed as in neighboring cities, but there are various light industries. There is a branch of Purdue University. Connected to Gary, it forms a metropolitan area. Population 84,236 (1990).

アメリカ合衆国,インディアナ州北西部,シカゴとゲーリーの中間に位置する都市。 1869年入植。内陸の湖の氷を利用した食肉包装が発達した。地名は冷凍肉輸送の創始者 G.ハモンドに由来。近隣の諸都市のような重工業は発達していないが,各種の軽工業がある。パーデュー大学の分校がある。ゲーリーと連接,大都市圏を形成。人口8万 4236 (1990) 。
