…Pietro Berrettini, a painter and architect representing the Italian High Baroque. Born in Cortona. He studied under the architect A. Commodi in Florence and traveled to Rome with him around 1612. He studied Raphael in Rome and, under the patronage of the Turin-born nobleman Cassiano dal Pozzo, perfected the high Baroque decorative style. His masterpiece, The Triumph of Providence (1633-39) in the Great Hall of the Palazzo Barberini, was produced in collaboration with Bernini and Borromini and became a model for illusionistic Baroque ceiling paintings. …
