Fat dormouse

Japanese: オオヤマネ - おおやまね(英語表記)fat dormouse
Fat dormouse

An animal of the mammalian class, rodent order, dormouse family. It is the largest species in the family, and lives widely in most parts of Europe and the forests of Asia Minor. Its body length is 13-19 cm, its tail length 11-15 cm, and it weighs 80-120 grams. It is arboreal, and is skilled at climbing trees and jumping from branch to branch, jumping up to 1 meter. It sleeps in nests it makes in tree holes during the day, and is active at night, feeding on acorns and other fruits. Once it has stored up enough fat in its body in autumn, it goes into hibernation in tree holes, or sometimes in holes it digs underground, sleeping until around May. It gives birth to 3-10 young per litter.
