A village in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture. It occupies the eastern part of Kumejima, about 100km west of Naha City on Okinawa Island (the main island), and includes the affiliated islands of Oujima and Ohajima. Population 5,157 (1995). There are mountainous areas about 300m above sea level on the south and north of the village, and lowlands spread out facing the coast in the center. It has long been known as a rice producing area, and efforts have been made to irrigate the water-scarce hills by building reservoirs, expanding the rice fields, but now most of the land has been converted to cultivation of staple crops such as sugarcane and flowers. Beef cattle are also raised here. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
