King of Sparta. Reigned 399-366 or 365 BC. His father was Archidamus II. He came to the throne through the power of Lysander. In 396 BC, he invaded Asia Minor to liberate Greek cities from Persia, and achieved military success, but was unable to achieve a decisive victory. In the Corinthian War that broke out the following year, he defeated the Corinthian allies at Coronea. After the Treaty of Antalcidas was concluded, he interpreted it in Sparta's favor, establishing oligarchy in Mantinea and Philios, and allowing Phoebidas to occupy Thebes.
