Frozen semen

Japanese: 凍結精液 - とうけつせいえき（英語表記）frozen semen

Semen diluted with a preservation solution and frozen in liquid nitrogen (-196°C). Used for artificial insemination of livestock. When livestock sperm is diluted with a preservation solution mainly made of egg yolk, sodium citrate, and glucose and stored at around 5°C, it can only retain its fertilizing ability for 4 to 5 days. However, in 1952, C. Polge and his colleagues in the UK succeeded in freezing semen on dry ice (-79°C) using a preservation solution containing glycerin as a cryoprotectant (7% of the total volume of diluted semen), and this was followed by a shift to cryopreservation.

保存液で希釈した精液を，液体窒素(－196℃)で凍結したもの。家畜の人工授精に用いる。家畜精子を，卵黄，クエン酸ナトリウム，ブドウ糖を主体にした保存液で希釈して5℃前後で保存した場合は，4～5日しか受精能力を保持できなかった。しかし，1952年にイギリスのポルジC.Polgeらが抗凍結剤としてグリセリンを添加(希釈精液総量の7％)した保存液を用いてドライアイス(－79℃)での凍結に成功してからは，凍結保存に切り替わった。
