French female novelist and playwright. Her real name was Françoise Quoirez. She was born in Cajarques in the south of France to a wealthy businessman, and grew up in Paris. She dropped out of the University of Paris. At the age of 18, she made her literary debut with Bonjour tristesse (1954), which won the Literary Criticism Award that same year. Her style of writing, which depicts the subtle psychological movements between men and women with a calm writing style that exudes a delicate atmosphere and a hint of ennui, caused a great sensation around the world. He later published novels such as Un certain sourire (1956), Dans un mois, Dans un an (1957), Aimez-vous Brahms? (1959), Les merveilleux nuages (1961), and La chamade (1966), as well as plays such as Un château en Suède (1960), Les violons parfois (1961), and La robe mauve de Valentine (1962). He also wrote ballets and chansons. The cynicism and emptiness of the younger generation, who are unable to have or believe in ideals, run deep in his concise, short sentences, which are free of all unnecessary elements, and they touch the souls of his readers. In Des bleus à l'âme (1972), he interweaves the story of the siblings who are the protagonists of his hit play The Swedish Castle with diary monologues, and in this book he speaks for the first time about his own life. From the 1970s onwards, he began to use more elaborate writing, producing a beautiful collection of short stories, Des yeux de soie (Silk Eyes) (1975), and a novel, Le lit défait (A Disheveled Bed) (1977). He then published a full-length novel, Un orage immobile (One in Love) (1983), about the tragic love between a 19th-century countess and a peasant poet, De guerre lasse (In the Embrace of Summer) (1985), about the resistance during World War II, and Avec mon meilleur souvenir (A Tender Recollection for Myself) (1984), a collection of essays depicting portraits of famous people, in which his friendship with Sartre is particularly movingly described. In the 1990s he published the novels Les faux-fuyants (Escape Routes) (1991) and Un chagrin de passage (In Search of Love) (1994), and continued to be active in his creative endeavours. In addition to writing, he was active in many areas, including directing his own plays and adapting them into films.
