[2] [1] A political party formed in 1896 ( Meiji 29 ) by the merger of smaller parties such as the Constitutional Reform Party, the Chugoku Progressive Party, and the Ote Club. The party was led by Okuma Shigenobu. The party formed an alliance with the second Matsukata cabinet, and Okuma joined the cabinet as foreign minister (later also minister of agriculture and commerce), but resigned the following year. In 1931, it merged with the Liberal Party to form the Constitutional Party, which was renamed the Constitutional Party four months later. [1] 〘名〙 進歩的な思想を持つ人達の集まり、結社。〔哲学字彙(1881)〕※大発見(1909)〈森鴎外〉「その間に地方長官の更迭がある。進歩党の長官が出来る」[2][一] 明治二九年(一八九六)立憲改進党を中心に立憲革新党・中国進歩党・大手倶楽部などの小党が合同して結成した政党。党首大隈重信。第二次松方内閣と提携し、大隈は外相(のち農商務相兼任)として入閣したが翌年辞任。同三一年、自由党と合同して憲政党となり、四か月後に憲政本党と改称した。[二] 昭和二〇年(一九四五)一一月に結成された日本進歩党の略称。同二二年日本民主党の結成に加わり、同二七年改進党と改称した。
