１精神障害の治療法の一種。統合失調症や鬱病うつびょうの患者に対し、ある種の衝撃ないし身体的ストレスを与えることによって症状の緩解をはかる方法。現在では使用頻度は減少しつつある。
２（比喩的に）無気力な、沈滞した状況にある人に強い刺激を与えて奮起させ、活力を取り戻させる方策をいう。「残業禁止というショック療法で能率向上を図る」
