East coast climate

The term for the climate found on the east coast of a continent, as opposed to the west coast climate. The difference between the east coast climate and the west coast climate is particularly noticeable in winter, when the east coast climate is cooler and has less rain in the mid-latitude regions, but hotter and more rainy in the low-latitude regions. The boundary between the mid-latitude and low-latitude regions is 25° to 30° north latitude in the Northern Hemisphere in winter and 40° to 45° north latitude in summer. This is due to the reversed location of land and sea on the east and west coasts of the continent, and the mixing of the air from the north and south due to atmospheric disturbances is more developed on the west coast of the continent than on the east coast. On the other hand, because the jet stream is strong above the east coast of the continent, the exchange of heat and water vapor between the air from the north and south is difficult. In addition, cold currents flow on the west coast of the continent and warm currents flow on the east coast, and the continent is easily influenced by the maritime air masses of each.

大陸の東岸にみられる気候で，西岸気候に対する用語。特に冬季に東岸気候と西岸気候の違いが顕著で，中緯度地方では東岸気候のほうが低温，少雨となるが，低緯度地方では高温，多雨となる。この中緯度地方と低緯度地方の境界は，北半球で冬は北緯 25°～30°，夏は北緯 40°～45°である。これは大陸の東岸と西岸では海陸配置が逆であることに起因し，大陸の西岸は東岸よりも大気の擾乱による南北の大気の混合がよりよく発達するためである。一方，大陸東岸の上空ではジェット気流が強いため，南北の大気の熱と水蒸気の交換が行なわれにくい。さらに大陸西岸には寒流が，東岸には暖流が流れており，それぞれの海洋気団の影響を受けやすい。
