Finally (ageku)

Japanese: 挙句(揚句) - あげく

A term used in renga and haikai. Refers to the final verse of a renku volume. Renku alternates between long verses of 5-7-5 and short verses of 7-7, but the final verse is a short one. It is customary to read it lightly, expressing joy at the completion of the volume and a feeling of congratulation. By rule, it is the spring verse that continues from the previous verse. The host and host do not read this verse, but if the shuhitsu, who is the recorder of the troupe, has not read it, he or she will read it. Struggling to add a verse at the end will kill the interest, so it is best to add it simply, even if it does not fit in with the previous verse, and it was sometimes prepared in advance.

連歌俳諧用語。連句一巻の最終句をいう。連句は五七五の長句と七七の短句を交互によみ続けるが，最終句は短句である。一巻の成就をよろこび，祝言の心をこめて，かるがるとよむのが通例。規則により，前句から続けて春季の句になる。主客と亭主はこれをよまず，一座の記録係である執筆（しゆひつ）がよんでいない場合は，これを勤める。最後の一句になって付けあぐんでは興がさめるので，前の句に少々なじまずとも，あっさり付けるのがよく，あらかじめ用意しておくこともあった。
