British dancer and choreographer. Born in London. Studied ballet under Marie Rambert (1888-1982) and joined the Rambert Ballet Company, where she choreographed her early representative works such as Chausson's "Lilac Garden" (1936) and Mahler's "Dark Elegy" (1937). In 1939, she moved to the United States and participated in the founding of Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre), presenting many works such as Schoenberg's "Pillar of Fire" (1942), Delius's "Romeo and Juliet" (1943), W. Schumann's "Undercurrent" (1945), and Mahler's "Shadow of the Wind" (1948). It is especially well known that Nora Kaye (1920-1987), who starred in "Pillar of Fire," became a star overnight. Tudor's work, which combined dance and acting, pioneered a unique realm of expression of the human psyche. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
