Ting

...The Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, which was formed through this struggle, was filled by representatives of the peasants, unlike the estates assemblies of other European countries.
[Meeting Structure]
The peasants met together (Old Norse thing, modern ting, often translated as Assembly) to deal with matters of common concern (mediation of mutual disputes, public order, defense). In pagan times, rites were also held here to sanctify the community and to pray for the harvest, peace, and victory in war.
