Abbreviation for Airborne Warning and Control System, which refers to an airborne warning and control system (early warning aircraft) equipped with an early warning system. It is a flying radar site equipped with electronic equipment with warning and control functions for civilian aircraft, capable of early detection and analysis of enemy aircraft intrusions, and command and control of interceptor fighter aircraft. A representative example is the E3 Sentry developed by the United States, which is a modified Boeing 707 passenger aircraft. Since the early warning aircraft E-2C previously owned by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force does not have the function to control interceptor fighter aircraft, two aircraft each were procured from the United States in 1993 and 1994, and have been deployed since 1998.

Airborne Warning and Control Systemの略で，早期警戒システムを搭載した空中警戒管制システム（早期警戒機）のこと。民間の航空機への警戒管制機能などをもつ電子機器を搭載して，敵の航空機の侵入を早期に察知・解析し，要撃戦闘機を指揮・統制する機能を持つ空飛ぶレーダーサイトである。米国が開発したE3セントリーがその代表で，これはボーイング707旅客機を改造したもの。航空自衛隊が従来保有していた早期警戒機E-2Cには要撃戦闘機をコントロールする機能がないため，米国から1993，1994年度にそれぞれ２機を調達，1998年度から配備されている。
