...The Japanese name is said to come from the fact that its skin is smooth and feels like woolen cloth. In some regions, it is often given names based on the fearsome appearance of its face, such as Kaimanryu, Mamushi, or Tokika. The English name comes from the fact that the frill-like gill flap protrudes partially from the gill slits.
