…the sixth canton in the Swiss Confederation. However, it is divided into two half cantons, Obwalden (area 491 km2, population 31,000 in 1996) and Nidwalden (area 276 km2, population 36,000 in 1996), which are divided into two half cantons. Each half canton has its own constitution and government, and each has a representative in the cantonal parliament.
