Seasonal migrant workers found in the sugar industry in the central Philippines. In sugarcane harvesting, the swift completion of the process from harvesting at the farm to transporting to the factory and squeezing is an essential prerequisite for preventing sugar loss. Therefore, a large demand for labor arises in any sugarcane harvesting area. In many cases, plantation owners ask contratistas, or labor recruiters, to procure this labor. Before the harvest season, the recruiters travel to nearby islands, go around among poor farmers, farm laborers, and landless laborers, and gather workers by offering them advances, then bring them back to islands where sugarcane plantations are concentrated, such as Negros Island.

フィリピン中部の糖業地帯でみられる季節的出稼ぎ労働者のこと。サトウキビの収穫では，農場での刈取りから工場への運搬，圧搾までの作業をできるだけ敏速に行うことが，糖分減耗を防ぐための不可欠の技術的前提である。そこでサトウキビ地帯の収穫期にはどこでも大量の労働力需要が発生する。この労働力調達を，農園主たちはコントラティスタと呼ばれる手配師に依頼する場合が多い。収穫期前になると手配師たちは付近の島々に渡り，貧農，雇農，土地なし労働者の間を回って前貸金を餌に労働者をかき集め，ネグロス島などサトウキビ農園の集中する島々に連れて戻ってくる。
