A Chinese fantasy novel from the Tang Dynasty written by Shen Jiji. A young farmer named Luo Sheng from Handan (Hebei Province) always dreamed of getting ahead in life and leaving the countryside. One day, he met a hermit named Luo at a tea shop and borrowed a ceramic pillow to take a nap on. In his dream, Luo saw his whole life, ups and downs between honor and shame, poverty and success, and when he woke up, it was only a short time before the millet rice cooked by the innkeeper before he went to sleep was cooked. Luo realized how fleeting worldly success is, and this story became the basis for the Noh play "Handan." The author Shen Jiji's birth and death years are unknown, but he was recommended by Yang Yan, a powerful man during the Jianzhong period of the Da Li period of the Tang Dynasty (766-783), to become a historian. This novel is said to have borrowed the story of the oak pillow at the Jiaohu Temple from the mysterious chronicle "Yumeiroku" from the Six Dynasties, and to have written about the lives of government officials at the time based on his own experiences.
