One of the largest automobile companies in Europe, based in Germany. Abbreviated as VW. Its subsidiaries include Audi, Seat SA of Spain, Skoda of the Czech Republic, and Rolls-Royce of the UK. Ferdinand Porsche began designing and prototyping the Volkswagen (which means "people's car" in German) in the early 1930s, based on Hitler's idea of a "people's car." With the completion of the KdWagen, the prototype of the beetle-shaped passenger car, GEZUVOR, a German people's car preparation company, was launched in 1938. The company was renamed Volkswagenwerk GmbH in the same year and began full-scale production, but the people's car plan was thwarted by World War II. Instead, the factory mass-produced military vehicles based on the KdWagen. After the war, production of the Beetle resumed as Wolfsburg Motorenwerk, which became an explosive hit. In 1960, with government funding and other funding, the company became a joint-stock company and changed its name to its current one. Since the 1970s, VW has introduced a succession of new car models, including the Passat, Scirocco, and Golf. Domestic production of the Beetle ended in 1977. More than half of the cars produced are now made overseas. In 1998, VW acquired Rolls-Royce, and in 2003 the rights to use the Rolls-Royce trademark were acquired by BMW of Germany, and VW focused on producing the Bentley, another luxury car from the company. In 2005, German luxury car manufacturer Porsche acquired 20% of the shares, and in January 2009, Porsche's shareholding exceeded 50%, making it a de facto subsidiary. However, Porsche's financial situation rapidly deteriorated during the financial crisis of 2008, and in June 2009, VW made a takeover proposal to Porsche, which Porsche rejected. With the market sluggish due to the global recession, the automobile industry was undergoing global restructuring, and this trend attracted attention. In October 2009, Volkswagen acquired 49.9% of Porsche's shares. In December 2009, Porsche announced a comprehensive partnership with Suzuki. Sales for the fiscal year ending December 2011 were 159.3 billion euros.

ドイツを本拠地とするヨーロッパ最大級の自動車会社。略称VW。傘下にアウディ社，スペインのSeat S.A.社，チェコのシュコダ社，英国のロールス・ロイス社を擁する。ヒトラーの国民車構想に基づき，フェルディナンド・ポルシェが1930年代初頭からフォルクスワーゲン（ドイツ語で国民車を意味する）の設計・試作を開始。カブトムシ型乗用車〈ビートル〉の原型となるKdFワーゲンの完成を機に1938年ドイツ国民車準備会社GEZUVORが発足。同年Volkswagenwerk GmbHに改称，本格生産に取り掛かるが第２次世界大戦により国民車計画は頓挫。代わりに工場ではKdFワーゲンをベースにした軍用車両を量産した。戦後，Wolfsburg Motorenwerkとしてビートルの生産を再開，爆発的な人気を呼んだ。1960年，政府の出資などにより，株式会社となり現社名に改称。1970年代以降〈パサート〉〈シロッコ〉〈ゴルフ〉などの新車種を次々投入した。ビートルは1977年国内生産を打ち切った。生産車の半数以上が海外で造られている。1998年ロールス・ロイス社を買収，2003年以降〈ロールス・ロイス〉の商標はドイツのBMW社が使用権を取得し，VWは同社のもう一つの高級車〈ベントレー〉の生産に特化した。2005年独高級車メーカーのポルシェが株式20％を取得，2009年１月にはポルシェの持ち株比率が50％を上回り事実上子会社化されたかのようにみえたが，2008年の金融危機下でポルシェの財務状況も急速に悪化，2009年６月逆にVWがポルシェに買収提案，ポルシェ側がこれを拒否するなど，世界同時不況で低迷する市場を背景に自動車産業の世界的な再編が進むなか，その動向が注目されたが，2009年10月フォルクスワーゲンがポルシェの株式の49.9％を取得した。2009年12月，スズキとの包括的提携を発表した。2011年12月期売上高1593億ユーロ。
