Its angle - Kikaku

Its angle - Kikaku

A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period. A senior disciple of Basho. Born in Edo on July 17, 1661. His father was a doctor in the Honda domain, and took the name Enomoto, later Takarai. He entered Basho's school at around the age of 14 or 15. At the age of 23, he published the haiku collection Minashiguri (1683). The following year, he traveled to Kyoto and Osaka, where he became acquainted with many other students, including Saikaku, and became active as a Basho writer with a wide range of works. He published works in his own unique style, such as Zoku Minashiguri (1687) and Itsuka wo Mukashi (1690), but he also produced many beautiful verses in Basho-style works. In 1694 (Genroku 7), he traveled to Kamigata and by chance was able to visit Basho at his bedside in Osaka the day before his death. After making all arrangements for the funeral, he published a memorial collection of haiku and haiku poems, Kareobana. Although he was a man of character, a free spirit, a heavy drinker, and wrote many works about pleasure quarters, he was also a kind-hearted man, and many of his excellent works were written after encountering the deaths of his teacher Basho, his friends, his parents, his daughters, and others. After Basho's death, he published Urawakaba (1697) and Shobikin (1701). He died on February 30, 4th year of the Hoei era. At his bedside were two books: Gogenshu, a collection of haiku poems he selected himself, and Ruikoji, a collection of haiku and haikai poems. After his death, Basho's style of writing was called Sharefu, characterized by urban haiku, and he is considered the ancestor of the later Edo-za theater, which had a major influence on Edo culture. There are mixed opinions about this style, but many of his works are difficult to understand, and further research is needed to shed light on Edo culture. It is also true that in the process of unraveling his ideas, a world different from that of his teacher Basho will open up.
