Stone money - Sekka

Japanese:
Stone money - Sekka

Valuables for exchange in Yap, Micronesia. In this island, social relations are maintained through the ritual exchange of valuables. Stone money and pearl shell money are used for this purpose. Stone money is made of white or light brown crystalline limestone mined in the Malakal region of Palau. It is disc-shaped with a hole in the center, and the smallest are 20 centimeters in diameter, while the largest are 4 meters in diameter and weigh 5 tons. The stone money was quarried in Palau and transported back by canoe or bamboo raft, which required a great deal of effort. In the 1880s, the Dutchman O'Keefe contracted to transport stone money by sailing ship, and the number of stone money increased. However, new stone money, even large ones, is said to be less valuable than old ones. The value of stone money varies depending on its diameter, color, shape, age, history, etc. Even today, these stone and shell money are actively exchanged through traditional social relations.
