A map that shows statistical values ​​on a map to show regional differences in quantity, density, value, etc., or the amount of flow between regions. Depending on the method of expression, it can be divided into choropleth maps, isopleth maps, dot maps, flow lines maps, etc. Choropleth maps, for example, divide values ​​into several classes, such as population density maps by city, ward, town, and village, and show each unit area with a color or shade that corresponds to the class. Isopleth maps, for example, use isobars on a weather map to show points of equal value as lines connecting points. Dot maps distribute a set of points, such as one point per 1000 people, and flow lines use strips of lines to show the route, direction, and amount of the flow of goods or personnel. Other methods include placing graphs of bars, circles, or spheres corresponding to the magnitude of the amount, or groups of circles, squares, triangles, cubes, or other small figures with a set unit amount, for each unit area. In addition, statistical maps are sometimes created by digitizing the information on the target land and inputting it onto magnetic tape, etc., and using a computer to create these statistical maps.

統計数値を地図上に表現して、量、密度、価値などの地域的な違い、あるいは地域間の流動量などを示すもの。表現方法によって、コロプレス地図、等値線図、ドット・マップ、流線図などに分かれる。コロプレス地図は、たとえば市区町村別人口密度図のように、数値をいくつかの階級に区分して、単位区域ごとに階級に応じた色彩や明暗で表現するもの、等値線図は、たとえば天気図の等圧線のように、値の等しい地点を連ねた線で表すもの、ドット・マップは、たとえば人口1000人当り1点というように決められた点を分布させるもの、流線図は、物資や人員などの流動の経路、方向や量を帯状の線を用いて示すものである。このほか、量の大小に対応する棒、円または球などのグラフ、あるいは単位量の決められた円、方形、三角形、立方体その他の小図形の集まりを、単位区域ごとに配置させる方法もある。なお、対象となる土地の情報を数値化して磁気テープなどに入力しておき、コンピュータを用いてこれらの統計地図を作成することも行われている。
