1218‐77 Emperor Taizong of the Tran Dynasty of Vietnam. Reigned 1225-58. Second son of Tran Toa, the assistant commander of the state, and a relative of Huizong of the Ly Dynasty. He ascended to the throne through the schemes of Tran Toa's younger brother, Tran Shoudu, who gained power by taking advantage of the decline of the Ly Dynasty, and established the Tran Dynasty in place of the Ly Dynasty. After taking control of the Imperial Guard as the commander in chief of the palace, Tran To Do forced Huizong to cede the throne to his 6-year-old second daughter, Princess Zhaosheng, and had his nephew, Khanh, who was the same age as Huizong, enter the throne as a young princess and become Emperor Zhao. He then married the two on the pretext that Emperor Zhao had thrown a betel nut to Khanh as a joke, and then had Emperor Zhao issue an edict of abdication, placing Khanh on the throne.
