From 1561 to 1565, he studied Roman law at the University of Padua in Italy, and in 1563 was elected lector of the student body. On his return, he was immediately employed as secretary to King Zygmunt August (1520-72), and was put in charge of sorting out the court documents that had been left unsorted until then.
