Alleppey (English spelling)

A port city in the southern part of Kerala state in southwestern India. It is the administrative capital of Alappuzha district. It faces the Arabian Sea and is located about 50 km south of Cochin. Since its construction by the British for overseas trade at the end of the 18th century, the city has developed on a narrow sandbar between the Arabian Sea and Lake Vembanad. The port is protected by a dike 1.6 km offshore and can be used except in the summer when the monsoon is strong. There are many small factories that manufacture coconut oil, mats and ropes using coconut fiber, and copra is actively shipped. Black pepper is also produced. Population: 174,606 (1991).
