A bird (illustration) of the family Phasianidae in the order Galliformes. It is endemic to Japan, living in the mountain forests of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It does not live in Hokkaido or its affiliated islands such as Sado Island, Yakushima, or Tanegashima. Males are larger than females (especially their tails are longer), reaching a total length of about 125 cm. The head, neck, and back are copper-brown with a strong reddish tint, the belly is pale yellowish brown, and the body has white, pale yellow, and black patterns. The long tail is yellowish brown with segmented spots that are white or pale yellow, black, and chestnut brown. The skin around the eyes is exposed and red. Females are about 60 cm in total length. キジ目キジ科の鳥(イラスト)。日本の固有種で,本州,四国,九州の山林に生息する。北海道と佐渡島,屋久島,種子島などの付属島嶼にはすんでいない。雄は雌より大きく(とくに尾が長い),全長約125cm。頭頸(とうけい)部と背面は赤みの強い銅褐色で,腹は淡黄褐色,体には白色,淡黄色,黒色の模様がある。長い尾は黄褐色で,白色ないし淡黄色,黒色,栗色からなる節状斑がある。眼周部は皮膚が裸出して赤い。雌は全長約60cm。
