[Died] June 18, 2003. American baseball player from Montclair, New Jersey. His real name was Lawrence Eugene Doby. He was the first African-American player in the American League and the second African-American player in the major leagues after Jackie Robinson. He played for the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League from 1942 to 1943, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He returned to the Eagles in 1946, and joined the Cleveland Indians of the American League in 1947. In 1948, he played center field for the Indians, batting .310. He hit a home run in the World Series and led his team to victory. In 1950, he batted .326 and led the league in on-base percentage. He won the league home run title twice. In 1954, he recorded 126 RBIs and helped the Indians win the league championship. From 1947 to 1959, he played for the Indians, Chicago White Sox, and Detroit Tigers for 13 years, and appeared in the All-Star Game seven times. In 1962, he returned to active duty and played one season for the Chunichi Dragons in Japan. He then served as a coach for the Montreal Expos, Indians, and White Sox. In 1978, he became the White Sox's manager, becoming the second African-American manager in the American League. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.
